Yes, you heard it right. The upcoming movie in the franchise, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or simply Rogue One, will be shown by the end of 2016 in time for the holidays and was filmed in the beautiful country of the Maldives.
At the annual Star Wars Celebration Event in London last July 15 – 17, 2016, director Gareth Edwards revealed that our favorite paradise was where some parts of the movie was shot. He even joked that this is probably where “everyone in a galaxy far, far, away likely goes to get away from it all”.
Scarif, the new location to be introduced in the movie, is a tropical planet in the Star Wars galaxy that is a planet full of crystal blue waters, palm trees, and sandy beaches. Boy, did they find the right place to film!
According to various sources, the shooting of the Scarif scenes were done on the island of Baresdhu in the Laamu atoll. They even hired members of the Maldivian army to play some of the Stormtroopers in the scenes where some of them were seen wading in the shallow waters. It’s going to be a very refreshing change from the usual Star Wars backgrounds.
