Ihuru is a lush and beautiful island reputed to be the most picturesque in the Maldives. Meaning "old palm trees" in the Dhivehi language, it boasts a beautiful palm-fringed beach of crystal clear waters and pristine white sands. Surrounded by a shallow lagoon and a nearby reef, the island is ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. Well known for its excellent cuisine, it is also a food paradise, perfect for those who live to eat.

It is in the little details, like homemade coconut ice cream offered to you upon arrival, that guests find happiness and comfort. Award-winning eco-island Angsana Ihuru is a mini paradise of palm-fringed beaches enclosed by coral gardens and a crystal clear lagoon. Taking pride in one of the best reefs in the Maldives; outstanding and colourful corals with diverse marine life can be reached just a few metres off shore. The delightful spa adds to the sense of being totally at peace on this quiet, idyllic isle. The resort's 45 guest villas are hidden away amidst the lush vegetation and decorated in a tasteful, contemporary style. Small in scale, exclusive and committed to pleasing guests, Angsana has an understated charm and intimacy of mood that are the very essence of the Maldives themselves.

Located conveniently close to the Maldives International Airport. A 20 minute boat ride will bring you to the stunning Ihuru island - meaning "old palm leaves" in Dhivehi, which is the national language spoken in the Maldives. It is so picture perfect that it is reputed to be one of the most photographed Maldivian islands.

The area of the island is 2.5 hectares (6 acres) of lush greenery, with over 590 metres (646 yds) of the most beautiful palm-lined beaches. The rare shape of the island is an almost perfect circle and small enough to walk around easily and never get lost!

Having only 45 villas scattered around the outside of the island ensures guests that they will have an oceanfront view. The villas are finished in a simple, sleek design that is nothing short of splendid. Villas may appeal to a younger crowd who enjoy a modern, yet cozy space: favouring earthy colours such as bamboo shoot green and citrus. In typical - tropical island style - all roofs are thatched and all villas have their own private garden. Smartly, most of the lush vegetation was left as it is- giving the island an authentic feel.

The bathrooms are open to the sky with the shower water spouting out of a granite column. 20 of the villas come with open-air jet pools for added luxury. All villas have the option of air-conditioning or fan, as well as a mini-bar, coffee-and tea-making facilities, a safe, direct-dial telephones, hairdryer and bathrobes. In front, each villa offers a private veranda with dining and sitting area, and has a swing 'joli' (a Maldivian swing seat) in a small garden made private by enclosing bushes and trees. Inside every villa, through the wall of French windows, you have a view of the beach and lagoon.

Dining

Angsana serves up an enticing array of dining options. If you prefer, have your meal on the beach, in your villa or picnic on a neighbouring sand-bank. Chefs create a harmonious fusion of Asian and Mediterranean flavours, exotic cocktails and lip-smacking snacks for intimate, dreamy dinners by the sea. Highlights:

Impress friends and family when you return home by learning how to prepare traditional Maldivian dishes with the resort's chef. Bring back a taste of The Maldives to your own kitchen.

Dine where, when and how you want with a menu and location tailored to suit your tastes.

Riveli Restaurant

At the Riveli (which means 'beam of light' in Dhivehi), you'll be intrigued by the blending of culinary cultures to satisfy everyone. Partake in the smorgasbord buffets and set dinners while feasting your eyes on the breathtaking view. Sit right next to the turquoise waters on the wooden deck, gaze at the radiant sky as it changes hues with the rising and setting of the sun and breathe in the salt-tinged breeze wafting in from the sea.

The Velaavani Bar

Since night entertainment is not organised here, you'll have to make up your own. The night atmosphere is especially cosy at the bar with hanging lamps and candlelight on the low tables. 'Velaavani' describes a shallow bay where turtles gather. Chill out at this waterfront bar by the lagoon and house reef where exotic, refreshing spirits and scrumptious snacks are available all day long. Swig, swill and sip your drink of choice as you try to spot turtles from the over-water deck. Even the occasional dolphin can be seen swimming joyfully along while you unwind to the gentle melody of the sea.

Private Dining

On the beach, aboard a glass bottom boat, at a sheltered sandbank or in a private villa prepared exclusively for you, the possibilities for private dining begin with your imagination and the help of ITAW travels's staff. Share your best ideas for a romantic dinner under the stars with us, and we will create that unforgettable evening to order. Choose from a range of gastronomical delights with the resort's set menus, or try the delicious outdoor barbeque. The evening promises to be a delectable feast for all the senses.

Activities & Recreation

Angsana has one of the best house reefs in the country, so naturally snorkelling and scuba diving are a must. When you itch for some activity, don your mask and fins and explore the continuous wonder of the blue depths. You need only step out of your villa to discover the breathtaking beauty of the island's underwater aquarium with over 140 recorded fish species and an abundance of living coral. The steep drop off and reef edge is neither too big nor too small, making this a snorkeler's dream. A host of recreational pursuits may persuade you to leave that lounge chair and get moving. From beach volleyball and bracing water sports to entertaining board games and absorbing marine biology excursions, there's something for everyone. If shopping is your preferred form of exercise (walking counts!) then make an excursion to the smallest capital city in the world. See how a quarter of Maldivians live in the jam-packed city; visit the historic sites and unusual shops with a guide.

Diving

Dive where you want! Explore one of the best and most colourful house reefs of the Maldives at Angsana or cross the waters to the Banyan Tree resort island for a change of reef scene. The best dive sites are some distance away on the edges of the atoll, but boats take divers out morning and afternoon. The first dive will be with an instructor for orientation and safety. If you are not an experienced diver, further training will be advised. The Resort is happy to share that one of the most interesting wrecks in the Maldives lies in the Angsana house reef - at a perfect depth for most divers. Satiate your curiosity by descending to a depth of 30 metres to investigate the mysterious 110m vessel that sank near Male' over 25 years ago. The curious and brave-hearted can get an astonishing bird's eye view as they ascend towards the surface. Home to a circus of colourful fish and flora and declared a protected marine area.

Step into the vibrant, charming world of Angsana Gallery, a lifestyle shop bringing you gifts and souvenirs that you can feel good about purchasing. The gallery exhibits and retails indigenous artifacts and handicrafts that support Maldivian arts and craftsmanship. Other treasures include jewellery and hand-made fabrics using traditional weaving methods. Spa amenities are available to bring back heavenly scents from your stay; choose from a range of specially blended massage oils, floral-based essential oils, and other brand products from the Angsana Spa Shop. From fashion apparel and home furnishings to jewellery and accessories, the Angsana Gallery offers you a myriad of remembrances of your time at the resort.

All non-motorised water sports are free, including all snorkelling equipment.

Essence of Angsana Spa

Located in the middle of the island and central to the resort is the large spa, with eight treatment rooms providing a holistic, non-clinical experience that uses aromatherapy and massage to refresh and rejuvenate you. The spa staff are trained in Thailand at the Banyan Tree Academy, with which Angsana is associated. This guarantees the same high standard that Banyan Tree Spa is famous for. The spa is usually quite busy as guests are lured in after their first treatment and generally want more.
